Movin’ On Up

“Well we’re movin’ on up, to the east side.  To a deluxe apartment in the sky.  Movin’ on up, to the east side.  We finally got a piece of the pie.”
Theme Song from The Jeffersons

As we were helping our daughter move to her new house yesterday, this song kept running through my head.  Maybe it was because her and her family were moving to Peyton, which is indeed on the east side, or maybe it was because they were moving on up from an apartment to a house.  No matter the reason, the lyrics seemed to be trying to tell me something.

And then it struck me.  God is always trying to help us move up in this life.  He is willing to guide us and give us the tools to ascend towards that glorious place he calls home.  He walks beside us as we help the less fortunate, he comforts us when we pray, and he smiles upon us when we spread his positive messages.

Step by step we travel this journey.  Obstacles, roadblocks, and detours will be encountered.  It will not always be easy, and the path may not be clear.  But when we follow God’s guidance and take his hand, the good works we experience and the miracles we witness become blessings that bring us one step closer to moving on up.

Rung by rung we climb that ladder.  It may seem unstable, shaky, and rickety.  Sometimes it may feel solid as it balances on a firm foundation and other times it may feel like the feet will collapse underneath us.  But if we allow God to move up those rungs ahead of us and take his hand to help us stay stable, we avoid looking back so we can continue to move on up.

“Movin’ on up.”  Maybe this is the message God is trying to portray this week.  Maybe he is nudging us to give a little more, listen a little more, and spread the gospel just a little more.  Maybe he is pushing us to remember the mission he has set out before us and to act with hope, faith, and grace.  And maybe, just maybe, as we walk beside him and fulfill his promises, we find ourselves “movin’ on up to that deluxe apartment in the sky!”

“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:14
